Read-Along touches thehearts of public school pupils in Naga

NAGA CITY---The Inquirer Read-Along event held here Saturday at the children’s section of the Raul S. Roco (RSR) Library in the City Hall compound has touched the hearts and minds of 70 pupils.

The activity also apparently boosted the continuing book-reading campaign here having for its guest readers a beauty queen and a book author.

Readers - Ms. Maria Venus Raj, Ms. Eco-Tourism 2008, and Kristian Sendon Cordero, read stories about the environment during the Read-Along event of the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Naga City Government, Raul S. Roco Library, Concepcion Pequeña Elementary School and Jollibee.

It was perfect in the RSR Library’s children section, occupying a ground-floor area of 220 sq. m. and painted with bright colored murals and illustrations on the wall including the planetary system on the background. An elevated platform where the sofa chair of the reader was mounted facing the children who were huddled comfortably over a blue colored rubber mat.

Mostly students from the Concepcion Pequeña Elementary School, the participants to the one-hour interactive storytelling were glad to be entertained even as they expressed delight over questions being answered by them with token rewards given.

Judy Ann, Grade 5 pupil, said the read-along becomes enjoyable because of the group activity especially when there were rewards doled out for correct answers given.

Chito de la Vega, Inquirer Libre editor, laid down the conduct of the Read-Along which included listening, avoiding distractive movements and cooperating to make the activity an enjoyable learning experience for everybody which every pupil agreed as all of them enthusiastically responded “Opo.”

Welcoming the participants of the Read-Along event, Mayor Jesse Robredo enjoined the school children to self-initiate reading in order to learn important things that they could use in actual life and he thanked Jollibee for providing the token items, food and entertainment through the Jollibee mascot.

The first story was read by Kristian Sendon Cordero, a Palanca awardee and Bicol fictionist, poet and book author, which was about the journey of a tiny raindrop from the clouds to the land, rivers and dams --- an allegory to the importance of water to the living.

Cordero engaged the kids when he opened the story of “Ang Munting Patak ng Ulan (The Tiny Raindrop)” by Gloria Villaraza Guzman by asking them to raise their hands if they have taken a bath in the rain in their lifetime. Almost every one raised their hand yelling “Opo!”.

Nice, another Grade 5 pupil, loved the storytelling Maria Venus Raj, Miss Philippine Eco-Tourism 2008, delivered because she said it was “nicely done” and the story she told was easily understood because she said it cited important things regarding the environment.

Raj, who wowed the kids with her stunning beauty, stopping from time-to-time to ask and draw answers from her audience, delivered the story of “Emang Engkantada at Ang Tatlong Haragan (Emang the Fairy and the Three Rowdy Brats)”.

Drawing collective answers from her audience, the beauty queen effectively generated participation as she supplied clues and reiterated answers as she went along with the story of three rowdy brats who ran into the beautiful place of the fairy, destroying and wasting everything on their path until Emang Engkantada punished them. In the end the three rowdy brats named Pat Kalat, Pol Putol and Paz Waldas were able to change their ways and became responsible kids helping protect and preserve the environment.

Abel, a Grade 6 pupil, said he enjoyed the activity because it was challenging as it tested their ability to comprehend during the question and answer portion after each story.

The kids expressed elation when the Jollibee mascot came in dancing while hip-hop music was played. With smart dancing moves, the Jollibee mascot engaged the kids to a dance showdown with several of them responding. The kids and everyone else were treated for lunch by Jollibee which capped the Read-Along activity for the day. .

In appreciation of the participation and assistance extended by the guest readers and the city government, Robredo, Raj and Cordero were each given a wall clock with the INQUIRER masthead and the mascot Guyito, including two boxes of children’s books donated to the RSR Library.

Federico Vinluan, RSR librarian, said that read-along project of the INQUIRER is similar to Children’s Bookfest program of the library here that he said it targets pre-schoolers from the city’s Educare centers and elementary pupils up to Grade 2. Vinluan said the program which had been going-on for two years now select readers from the local officialdom, the academe, the business community and civic organizations who took turns in reading children’s books and amplifying them for the benefit of their young listeners.

Nagueños to fete 2nd Roco Day

Nagueños will celebrate the 4th Raul S. Roco Day from October 23-26 with various activities lined up to pay homage to the man “who could have been the best president that Filipinos never had” with this year’s theme: “From Dreamers to World Leaders”.

The Raul S. Roco Foundation and the City Government of Naga headed by Mayor Jesse M. Robredo have as early as October 17 to 24 sponsored storytelling, games, Internet quiz, poster-making and film viewing at the Raul S. Roco Library-Children’s Nook.

On October 25, at 7:00 p.m. at Plaza Quezon, there will be the Raul S. Roco Lives On! Battle of the Bands.

A memorial mass will be held at 6:30-7:30 a.m. of October 26 at the Our Lady of Penafrancia Basilica Minore which will be followed by wreathlaying at 8:00 a.m. at the tomb of the distinguished Bicolano senator at the Sto. Niño Memorial Park.

At 9:00 a.m. of the same day will be the final event which is the awarding of the 2nd Raul S. Roco Youth Achievement Awards to be held at the Universidad de Sta. Isabel auditorium.

Roco Library Resource Sharing Launched

Raul S. Roco Library's“Interlibrary loan project” is based on mutual partnership to increase the quality of book collection between and among libraries. Partnering schools in the project are the HOLY ROSARY MINOR SEMINARY and the Naga campuses of AMA COMPUTER COLLEGE, COMPUTER COMMUNICATION DEV. INSTITUTE and PHIL. COMP. FOUNDATION COLLEGE .Both partnering libraries uphold the importance of making information available and accessible to every resident of the city. Under a Memorandum of Agreement, partnering libraries can be both the lending library and the borrowing library. The project will allow a partnering library to share and request resource materials with other libraries partnering in the project.

As a lending library, the Raul S. Roco Library will lend books on Bicol culture and other circulation materials that are essential and required readings for college curricular subjects at AMA Computer College, Comp. Comm. Dev. Institute, Phil. Comp. Foundation College and Holy Rosary Minor Seminary.
As a borrowing library, the Raul S. Roco Library will avail of Philosophy books from the Holy Rosary Minor Seminary, and Computer Books from computer colleges.

The agreement allows the borrowing library to avail of its entire collection for one-in-a-half months. Thus, library collection are increased and the quality of materials that are being used by readers are boosted, and extra cost for for duplicate resources are minimized or prevented.The ceremonial signing of the Memorandum of Agreement was conducted last December 8, 2005 during simple ceremonies at the Ground Floor of the Raul S. Roco Library with Mayor Jesse M. Robredo, HRMS Rector Fr Peter C. Beriña, AMA School Director Enrique Villamor, and CCDI and PCFC Schools Administrators Erwin Nacianceno and Zenaida Llorin, RESPECTIVELY, as guests.

Buknoy, the National Book Development Board mascot for readership, toured Naga City last October 3, 2005 during the Opening Ceremonies of NBDB's Booklatan sa Naga. The tour was spearheaded by NBDB, Naga City Public Library and the Naga City Mayor's Office.

Buknoy, together with Jollibee, toured the Naga City proper while being convoyed by Naga City's Wings Riders Motor Club, Naga City government staff, NBDB Acting Executive Officer Maricar T. Aquino, Department of Education Library Hub Project Officer Beverly Gonda, Naga City Librarian Mr. Federico Vinluan and the ten book fair exhibitors; namely, Anvil Publishing, Adarna Publishing, Fil-Way Enterprise, Creative Minds, Ibon Foundation, OMF Literature, Hiyas Publishing, Lampara Publications, Rex Book Store, and WS Publications.

For the first time, the people of Naga City saw and met Buknoy, the country's symbol for readership and love for books. Children and young adults enjoyed Buknoy's presence during the motorcade.

The tour ended at the Naga City Public Library where Hon. Mayor Jessie Robredo, NBDB Acting Executive Officer Aquino and Vice-Mayor Gabriel Bordado graced the ceremonial ribbon-cutting and the official opening of the book fair. Thereafter, Buknoy mingled with guests and visitors who were mostly students and children. Buknoy and the guests later posed before photographers for posterity.

The Booklatan sa Naga was held last October 1-7, 2005 in line with the Department of Education's Library Hub project. The Seminar on Library Hub Administration and the Storytelling Workshop/Session were held on October 1, while the Training on Readership was conducted the day after, October 2. A book fair was also held from October 3-7. NBDB was able to donate 500 books to the Naga City library.

Naga City Reading Centers Workshop Launched

The Naga City Public Library has conducted an intensive four-day seminar-workshop last August 16-17 and 24-25, 2005 on the establishment of barangay reading center with the Public Libraries Division Chief Sancho Domenden as main speaker.

The seminar-workshop was started with a ceremonial signing of the Memorandum of Agreement between the National Library, Naga City Government and the 19 barangays with Mayor Jesse M. Robredo,Vice Mayor Gabby Bordado Jr., Mr. Domenden and the 19 Barangay Chairmen.

The newly organized 19 barangay reading centers will now be added to the current 376 functional barangay reading centers registered with the National Library out of the 41,975 barangays in the country.

Completing the four-day workshops were lectures on different areas of library services. The resource persons were: Maria Velarde, Records Officer III, Naga City Mayor Office on the importance of records; Edna San Buenaventura, Director of Libraries, Ateneo de Naga University, on Selection of library materials; Emma Moran, Director of Libraries, University of Nueva Caceres, on Managing the services of the barangay reading center; Donabella Marilag, Chief Librarian, Naga College Foundation; and Sr. Paz Mercado, Director of Libraries, Universidad De Santa Isabel, on Identifying and organizing the library materials; Peñafrancia Ablay, Chief Librarian, Cam. Sur Polytechnic College , Naga Campus, on Preservation of library materials.

17 NEW READING CENTERS IN NAGA ORGANIZED

Promoting readership in the city is the main objective of the Raul S. Roco Library. A complete line of activities has been prepared to ensure that two-thirds of the barangays in Naga will have functional reading centers.Last August 16-17, and 24-25, the City Library partnered with the National Library to conduct an intensive seminar-workshop to 17 barangays in Naga City. The workshop was graced by the Public Libraries' Division Chief Sancho Domenden, Mayor Jesse M. Robredo and Vice Mayor Gabby Bordado Jr., along with the 17 Barangay Chairmen in the ceremonial signing of the Memorandum of Agreement.

Immediately after the workshop, a field evaluation and site visit was conducted by Ms. Emma Aureus to specified barangay reading centers. Presently, 8 barangays were registered with the National Library, namely: Triangulo, Con. Pequeña, Con. Grande, Del Rosario, Bag. Norte, Santa Cruz , Caluag, Pacol, and Peñafrancia. The other 9 barangays are expected to be registered this year pending the submission of requirement to the National Library-Public Libraries Division.

These barangay reading centers will enjoy the benefits of the technical support and preparation being extended by the Naga City Library. In addition, a Library Assistance Drive entitled “LIBRARY KATUWANG” will be launched in March 3, 2006 aimed at providing each barangay reading center with library tables, shelves and chairs.

Byaheng Bukmubil visits schoolkids; Booklovers Club Organized

The newly – launched Byaheng Bukmubil program of the Naga City Public Library reached every nook and cranny of Naga City in the hope of promoting the importance of reading and drumbeat reading awareness through story telling programs among the schoolchildren.

With the Jollibee mascot in tow, the Byaheng Bukmubil visited RV Maramba, San Isidro , Traingulo, Caluag , Del Rosario , Julian Meliton, Pacol, and Santa Cruz with storytelling ably performed by Peace Corps Volunteer Nick Hake, City Councilors John Bongat, Allen Reondanga, Lourdes Asence, and Julian Lavadia to the delight of the Grade School.

The gradeschoolers together with students from Camarines Sur National High School and Concepcion Pequeña National High School would later organized themselves into a library club dubbed as the BOOKLOVERS, part of the school-to-school campaign of the NC Public Library to increase the library readership clientele.

A Sanggunian resolution is currently pending to rename the Naga City Public Library into Raul S. Roco Library as a tribute to the city's pride and favorite son, former Senator and DepEd Secretary, who passed way last August 5. Excerpt from City Hall Matters - FBJ

Newsletter writing seminar @ Naga City Public Library

University students volunteered in Naga City Public Library's Creative and Newsletter Writing Workshop

Three university students from Metro Manila served as facilitators in Raul S. Roco Library's Creative and Newsletter Writing Workshop held on April 5, 6, 12 and 13, 2005. They were Patrick Bejerano, journalism major and Danilo Sebollena, an English major both from the University of the Philippines Diliman and Erwin Ronase, an economics major from the University of Sto . Tomas, Sampaloc, Manila . They were part of a group of university students who joined the 10-day Naga City Work Camp, a joint project of the Naga City government and University Center Foundation, Inc. (UCF), a youth-oriented private NGO, held last summer vacation.

"I enjoyed teaching the pupils the rudiments of news writing", says Erwin Ronase, who is also active in another UCF project, tutoring slow-readers in a puplic school in Sampaloc, Manila .

The project was formed with the aim of providing opportunities for elementary pupils to hone their writing skills. The target participants of the workshop were incoming grade 5 pupils from different public elementary schools in Naga City . Each school was given a chance to send 10 pupils to the workshop. Accompanied by their teachers, the pupils received a one-day seminar-workshop from the three volunteers. A total of thirty-seven (37) actually attended the seminar-workshop.

The seminar-workshop was divided into three sessions. The first and second sessions discussed the structure of the newspaper and the mechanics of writing a news article. The third session was a tour to a printing press, the Gold Print Publishing House which publishes the weekly Bicol Mail. The tour supplemented the discussions by showing to the participants the complete process of newspaper making.

"I also learned something new", quipped Danilo Sebollena, who saw the insides of a printing shop for the first time while accompanying the pupil participants during the tour.

At the end of the day-long activity, the pupils, under the guidance of the Assistant Librarian, Federico Vinluan, produced an on-the-spot newsletter for their own school.

The seminar-workshop used powerpoint presentations, a video camera recorder and a television set to enhance the instruction.
